Song, By Toad Split 12″ v3 – Insider Festival

Song, By Toad’s latest addition to the split record series differs from previous efforts in that it was not recorded at label founder Matthew’s home, but instead at Inshriach House during the Insider Festival. Despite this, the third split makes for a cohesive addition to the series, with the familiar session photos have the inviting appeal and a similarly well curated release.

David Thomas Broughton, a recent addition to the Song, By Toad family bookends the release. Broughton is an artists who comes to life live. His studio recordings are interesting and original, but live he is unlike anyone else. From dueting with rape alarms, to clumsily falling over the stage, well formed songs fall apart into chaotic madness, whilst being juxtaposed with subtle hints of beauty that are made all the more powerful due to their sparse nature. The recordings offered here are true portrayals to David’s live show, and the performance and character shines through.

With three songs Jonnie Common’s processed, folk influenced pop is as catchy and charming as ever. Jonnie’s innocent melodies and instrumentation draw you in to what is actually a fairly complex performance for two. Summer Is For Going Places is a prime example of Jonnie at his best.

Sparrow and the Workshop take a more laid back approach on Valley of the Death, along with a cover of James Yorkston’s Chalkhill Blue, and unfortunately provide the weak link in the release. Jill O’Sullivan’s vocals are as strong as ever, but the band lack the passion, individuality and fun of the rest of the release.

That leaves only Siobhan Wilson (now going by Ella The Bird). Siobhan’s one song on the split overshadows all that comes before and after with its haunting beauty and power. After a radio 2 friendly release, Songs, in France, Siobhan moved back to Scotland and released homemade EP, Glorified Demons, which is, at times, victim to its own DIY charm. However, with a simple and well recorded performance of Dear God, Siobhan’s breathtaking, crowd stopping force is displayed impeccably.
